It's been recognized that the fuel load on Piers Island has been building for years. Luckily, we've not faced a forest fire on Piers in the most recent history of habitation and the inception of PIA (August 28, 1959). Both PIA and PIVFD recognize that the fuel load issue needs to be addressed. A Community Wildfire Protection Plan was completed several years ago and we are working towards completing recommended treatments of target areas. Any fire on Piers Island is instantly an interface fire- our homes are in the interface area.
Islanders are working together to bring change in a positive way, while still respecting the natural beauty of Piers, but as always, there must be compromise to succeed in keeping the Island fire safe. We'll continue to post before and after photos documenting the changes.
